Earlier this week I shared the picture below from one of the places we stayed at in Ecuador, San Isidro Lodge. Did you guess what it is for? If you guessed it’s a bird feeder, you’re right! This canvas cloth was suspended below the lodge’s observation deck and you can see a lightbulb hanging down in the center of the cloth. During the night the light attracts hundreds of moths and other flying critters and they land on the canvas. At sunrise birds show up for breakfast – they fly in and pick a moth off the canvas and then perch nearby to devour their breakfast (this also occurred at night as a pair of Black-banded Owls picked insects off the cloth). Below the canvas shot are pictures of a Blackburnian Warbler, Canada Warbler, and Montane Woodcreeper enjoying their breakfast.
