While visiting my dad on Hilton Head Island we visited a hotspot very close to his home, the Newell Audubon Preserve. This 50-acre preserve was set aside by the developer of the Sea Pines Plantation and the people who care for the area have done a great job of posting signs identifying trees and shrubs and have built several paths through the dense pine forest.
Right in the parking lot is a bird bath with a pipe that drips in water and this attracts a variety of birds. Here are some that I saw right from the parking lot.
The Brown-headed Nuthatch is not found in Chicagoland so it’s always a treat to see one when we visit Hilton Head.
We always hear Eastern Towhee when we walk through the preserve, but often can’t spot them in the underbrush. This one came and perched on the pipe dripping water into a bird bath.
Hilton Head is a winter migration spot for many Yellow-rumped Warblers. We probably saw 20 of them during our walk through Newell. This one enjoyed a bath in the fresh water.
