While staying south of Tucson, Arizona we had an opportunity to watch two Red-tailed Hawks cruise around the countryside. Note how much darker the leading and trailing edges of the wings are than the Eastern subspecies are.

Love this flying shot! I would think that the lighter color would be better for the bird as not to absorb heat in the warmer climates. But I’m sure mother nature has her reasons.
