Sandhill Crane

Nictitating Membrane

Viewed 11 Times

Birds have a nictitating membrane beneath their eyelid.  It is stored on the inside edge of the eye and sweeps across vertically and helps keep the eye moist and protects it during flight.  I just happened to catch this one as it was closed across the eye of the Sandhill Crane.
