A European/Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) perched on garden hook waiting for it’s turn at the suet feeder. We put out Suet for all our little birds but the Starlings and the crows soon discover it. We try to discourage them but to no avail. They’ll have their share. We don’t really mind! Here on the west coast we see these birds year round.

Starlings are often overlooked – they have a beauty unlike other birds. Curious how you got the black background?
Mike, in our yard the one corned is quite dark. That combined with a high shutter speed generally produces the dark background. I’m quite taken with it too.
There seems to be a lot of Starlings around this year. I guess they had a good year!
They’re not my favorite bird, but this is a gorgeous photo.
Thank you for your comments! I know they aren’t well liked. The berry farmers around here hate them. A large flock can strip a field of Raspberries in no time, The farmers use air cannons to keep them away.
I still think they are very pretty birds!
