Golden-fronted Woodpecker

Where’s the Gold?

Viewed 25 Times

The Golden-fronted Woodpecker of Honduras looks a lot like the Red-Bellied Woodpecker we are familiar with here in the Midwest. According to the Cornell Bird Guide, there are four sub-species of this bird ranging from Texas in the north, to lower Central America in the south. They vary by slight differences in color, most notably in the nape. The northern species has a yellow nape while the southern species has a more orange/reddish nape. If you look closely, you can also see a trace of yellow in the feathers on the belly of this female.
