This was the second Belted Kingfisher to appear in my yard last fall. This is one of the few species where the female is more colorful than the male so without the chestnut band across the middle this one is a male, appropriately sporting the pompadour hairdo. I watched him for about an hour or so diving into the pond for some fish. I could tell he was wary of my presence and stayed at a distance in the neighbor’s willow.
