This little house wren was born in a birdhouse in my yard last July. He/she was the only survivor, its sibling fell prey to a hungry chipmunk. This photo was taken about two weeks after it fledged, looks almost full-grown here if not for the yellow in the gape flange still visible. Its parents had already left, and this was the last time I saw it in my yard.

thanks! I guess the more technical term I should have used is “gape flange” – it’s the area in the corners of the beak that is more brightly colored in young birds.
