This bird is common in the mountains of San Diego County. For me, it is a very frustrating bird to attempt to photograph. Constantly moving and often located in pines where it constantly going up and down the trunks. It seems to be always on the opposite side of the tree from where I am.

Great pic – how much smaller are they from the White- and Red-breasted Nuthatches we see in the Midwest?
About 2/3s the size of White-breasted. Although we have a few Red-breasted Nuthatches in our area, they are uncommon and I have never been fortunate enough to see one, let alone photograph one.
