This was my first sighting of this NZ endemic bird. They were released in this sanctuary to establish the numbers and this has been a huge success. they have been breeding over the last 5 years and most of the chicks have survived due to strict predator control. They can be seen at the top of the sanctuary which involves climbing a very steep track for over 2 and half hours. There is a feeder up there that is not used often. Here it is at the feeder. I waited 2 hours in the cold bush to take this image.
