Just past the Hamilton Reservoir Dam, after a spillway discharge, the water entering the Quinebaug River forms a pool that slowly feeds the River downstream. Even with Hamilton Reservoir frozen over at this time of year, the pool and river remain ice free. People will fish in this small pool that can concentrate fish, so it’s no surprise to find a Kingfisher here periodically. A bridge for the road goes over the river between the dam and the pool. When I pass over the bridge in my car, (which I often do since I live nearby) I often go slowly to see if Herons or Kingfishers are hunting there. Surprisingly, this Kingfisher didn’t fly away when I stopped and captured a few images. Being a male Kingfisher (for a change) and not needing the 1.4 extender, were bonuses.
