In Naples Florida we hear the Chuck-Wills calling after dark each spring, but almost never see them.
Someone ahead of us on a Sabine Woods, High Island trail spotted this Chuck-Wills-Widow perched on a branch in plain sight (if you knew where to look) and alterted us. It was really a thrill to see one of these birds in daylight, quietly resting. If you zoom in on the photo, you’ll be able to see the bristles around its beak that it uses to help catch flying insects…fascinating!
