A local birder spotted this Rufous Hummingbird in 2018 at his feeder. He let Curtis, Ottawa County Naturalist, know about it. Curtis put out the word and away we went. We know Hank so he graciously invited us into his home. Eric and I stood at the opened kitchen window and took lots of photos from about 20 feet away. I took over 400 photos in an attempt to get a photo of its tail so it could be correctly identified as a Rufous. About the last photo I took has the tail markings. I do not know how many photos Eric took.
The similar species at least in the fall is the Anna’s Hummingbird. The Rufous has the rufous on its tail.
Good descriptive shot of the Rufous hummer. We get Rufous here once in a while but I can’t remember ever having an Anna’s around this area.
