As I was walking a trail I saw a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher grab a bug and fly away. But as I followed his exit I saw him land on a branch nearby with a nest and some very loud and hungry chicks awaiting his return. I watched for about 20 minutes and saw both adult parents bring back bug after bug making sure each of the four little ones got fed. This shot has two of the babies reaching out for the damselfly. If you look closely you will see that different wings of the bug are in each of the bird’s mouths. I’m not sure who the adult gave the bug to but rest assured no one went hungry. And look at that beautiful nest. Well constructed, had lichen for camouflage and was nice and deep. I love watching behavior and this morning was a real treat.
