Henry posted some dynamite flight shots of this mega rarity, but I thought I’d add one of it swimming for additional observation. I love watching behavior and today did not disappoint. This 1st winter bird was plucking food from the top of the water and just underneath as well. Not quite like phalaropes but almost similar in the fact that he worked a small area and moved constantly. What he was eating is anyones guess. I didn’t see him eat a fish but small bugs might have been in the water. The bird stayed in a small protected area near shore but also flew down a canal looking for food as well. What a spectacular day. Sitting next to DuPage Birding Buddies Bonnie and Joan made it all the more fun. I hope the bird sticks around a little longer so everyone can see it.
