“Mirror, mirror on the wall”. Are birds vain? They certainly spend some time looking at reflections of themselves. In all likelihood they view the reflection as a potential rival rather than a reflection of themselves. This bird, a Golden Tanager, watched its reflection in a bird bath for some period of time before losing interest. This was taken in northern Ecuador at Birdwatcher’s House near Mindo. Shot with a Canon R5, 600 mm f/4.0 lens.

Thank you. At this lodge there are a number of reflection ponds set up. Amazing that birds still visit these in spite of water everywhere; this is a rain forest after all (actually it is a cloud forest, but still it rains daily).
