Ferruginous Hawk

Hunting Prairie Dogs

Viewed 30 Times

A Ferruginous Hawk (a lifer for me) hunting prairie dogs from a low ridge. I am told they frequently hunt from the ground and have been known to hide behind rabbit brush to pounce on unsuspecting prey. They have a distinctive gape in that it is elongated and makes them look like they are smiling.

Great photo! Hawks are very elusive (at least for me) so congrats capturing this great up-close photo!
