Blue duck is now a very restricted species rarely found far from fast-flowing mountain streams. It is threatened by predation from introduced mammals especially stoats. In an adult its bill has fleshy skin flaps hanging from the sides of the tip. I hiked 14kms return to see this duck, it was such a thrill to see it feeding by a waterfall
