This is an unusual site for North Carolina. I came across this bunch of American White Pelican in the back waters of Lake Tillery this morning while kayaking. I guess they were taking a break while migrating. It is uncommon for them in this area. I could not count them but I would estimate close to one hundred. The only other time I have seen them was several years ago and the males had a growth on their bills I assume was to impress the females. Done nothing to impress me though. These all looked like females.

Great fish-eye view of the pelicans. Interesting that they were all female – the males must have already come through.
