The first time I saw an adult Red-headed Woodpecker in the woods, I was stunned at how red it’s head was, and I perfectly understood how it earned it’s nickname the flying checkerboard. Like most woodpeckers, they also make the coolest sounds. This one posed nice for me on this dead tree, and as it turns out this is the only photo I’ve ever had published (on someone’s blog).
