This bird is ‘At Risk’ This shearwater nests high up on the Kaikoura mountains at 1200mts in burrows. Due to predators many have not survived, so we have made boxes and inserted them into the ground on a peninsula overlooking the mountains and brought chicks down and put them into these nests and hand fed them for several weeks before they have flown out to sea. This recovery programme has been a success as 3 years later they have returned to the peninsula to breed.
