This is a California Scrub Jay. This was recently declared an “armchair” bird as it was split off from “Scrub Jays” to California Scrub Jay and Woodhouse Scrub Jay. I got a “two for one” lifer. These are typical jays. Loud, usually in small groups, watchful for raptors and will eat about anything.

Two-for-one Lifer split – Sweet! I was going to say it looked a lot like the Florida Scrub Jay before reading your description.
