A male Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris)
A pretty duck, but why they called him Ring-neck instead of Ring-billed, is beyond me!

Great pic of the Ring-necked – love the perfect reflection, too! The story is they used to hunt/kill birds to study them. On the inspection table the observers saw a ring around the next, hence its name. There is a hint of color on the collar of this bird – I wonder if it is part of the hidden ring?
Thank you, Mike! You can see the ring in this shot. It’s brown and hardly a prominent feature, especially when compared with the bill!
Nice kisser!
Thank you! It really is, isn’t it. A challenge to work out what the evolutionary genes were thinking about!!
