One of the attractions of doing a birding trip in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia is experiencing some of the culture of the country and seeing sights we don’t see that often in the U.S. Here are a couple of pics from Canada I think you’ll find interesting, even though there aren’t any bird pics.
Here’s a “Newfoundland Breakfast” with backed beans, roll, Toutons with molasses, and pan-fried bologna. Toutons are like a cross between a doughnut and a pancake and is pan-fried to make it crispy.
Now this is what I call a Newfoundland dinner! Whole lobster with some potato salad. I died and went to heaven!
While near the coast we often spotted Gray Seals out in the ocean.
I know this one is hard to see but if you look closely the water is dotted with many different colored buoys (the colors identify who owns the buoys). What are they trapping? Jonah and Rock Crab are caught, although an invasive Green Crab has entered some of the fisheries..
Here’s a closeup of some crab traps. The end of crab season was imminent so the traps were being collected and stored until next season.
As we awaited our whale-watching boat (not one was seen) I noticed a boat-full of crab being unloaded. Bin after bin of these big crabs were being handed up to the men on the dock.
We took a long hike out to a remote pond (evidently they call all bodies of water “ponds”) in search of birds. Not many birds but this big female moose more than satisfied my yearning for wildlife.
Finally, while driving down a two-lane road a male moose was spotted. The van came to a stop in time for us to get a great look at this huge, beautiful beast.
