Backyard Birds
We have spotted about 70 species of birds in our backyard over the years – from Bald Eagles flying over to House Wrens nesting in our neighbor’s shed. However we hardly ever get any visiting warblers. So imagine my surprise the other day when I peered out and spotted a flash of bright yellow; thinking it was one of the many Goldfinch that visit the thistle feeder I didn’t pay much attention to it until I realized it was a Yellow Warbler! This cute little guy (see the red stripes on his breast) was feeding from the platform feeder, which was filled with safflower. I grabbed my camera a took a few shots of him atop the pole holding the feeder.
As I continued to watch the rare visitor to our backyard I took some shots of him in the feeder, but I prefer more natural-looking shots (that don’t include the hand-of-man). Here he perched on a dead stalk in the garden right behind the feeders.
As I continued to watch the birds in our backyard a female Baltimore Oriole flew in and perched on the same pole the Yellow Warbler was on minutes ago. She usually goes for the oranges and grape jelly on the oriole feeder but this time she had a few seeds from the tube feeder below her.
White-crowned Sparrows usually hop beneath the scrubs that line the perimeter of our backyard. This one wanted a drink of water and flew up to the birdbath for a few sips.
If you have feeders then you probably have House Sparrows around. They are the most numerous visitor to our feeders and have even built a condo atop the outdoor speakers beneath the eaves of the roof. I usually don’t pay much attention to them but since I had my camera in hand I took a few shots of this handsome male perched in our Ginkgo Tree.
