Pretty Bird! Pretty Bird!
Let’s take a look at what’s flown in lately from our members:
Osprey60 had a close look at an American Barn Swallow. These birds swoop over bodies of water and snatch bugs out of the sky for breakfast. They also like to perch on wires and sticks, giving us a good opportunity to grab a pic. Great detail in this one!
Rebecca Bowater sends us a Scaly-breasted Munia from Australia. Munias are a common species in Asia (I saw a couple varieties in Thailand). Some have escaped captivity in the U.S. and are occasionally reported in California and Texas (warm climates). They are small birds with big bills.
Now through the magic of the Internet we zip down to Costa Rica and catch up with BajaDreamer. He caught a Violet-headed Hummingbird as it came to a bright orange Heliconia blossom for a sip of water – the cup-shaped blossoms catch rainwater. Click on the image and read some interesting information about the location he took the pic at. Beautiful composition and colors, BajaDreamer!
Finally, we leave you with a look at one of my wife Karen’s favorite waterfowl – the Pied-billed Grebe. Pied means two-colored so this small diving bird is aptly named. It seems like it is under water as much as it glides along on the surface. They migrate down from their breeding grounds way up north and are arriving as we speak. Great shot Birder2011!
