Inca Tern is Such a Tease!

Continuing coverage of my February, 2024 birding trip with Field Guides’ Birds and Wines of Chile and Argentina.

While looking over the deck wall of our hotel in Viña del Mar, Chile I spotted an adult Inca Tern with a sardine in its bill and a nearby immature bird waiting to be fed.  The next series of pictures show how the adult (bottom) held out the food but as the immature bird went forward to grab it, the adult kept moving it away!  This scene repeated several times before the adult finally allowed the food to be taken.  I assume that this was training the younger bird how to grasp quickly at a moving prey.  NOTE:  only the first image of each group below is clickable – the rest were not entered into the database of pics because they were somewhat redundant.

This time the adult allows the chick to have the food.
