GBP Member Avneet Kaur has been up in Zac Sim Bog, Minnesota and sending back pics of some of the boreal (a climate zone south of the Arctic) birds he’s found up there. Last week Avneet’s shot of a Great Gray Owl was our Bird Photograph of the Week, but when I saw his picture of a Boreal Owl I had to share it with you. This infrequent visitor usually resides in Northern Canada but sometimes migrates down to “warmer” weather in winter (the temperature there was about 0º when Avneet took this shot – up from -12º at 9 AM). Some die-hard birders in this area are seriously thinking about driving up there (about 9 hours) just to see this rare owl. Note: it must have been very low light there because according to the EXIF data shown he was shooting at 12800 ISO. Applying Noise Reduction greatly improved this shot. GreatBirdPic, Avneet!

Love the owl pictures. I drove from Michigan to Oregon to see an airplane, so 9 hours to see an owl is a piece of cake!
