Our Bird Photograph of the Week comes to us from Nelson, New Zealand. Rebecca Bowater took this panoramic shot of a sand spit at low tide with over 1500 birds in the shot. As you can see some of them are in breeding plumage; they are about to begin their lengthy migration to Alaska and Siberia. The smallest birds are the Red Knots (with the bright red-orange breast), larger birds are the Bar-tailed Godwits (some also showing a colorful breast) and Ruddy Turnstones line the back of the image. When I look at this shot I imagine it blown up, hanging in a museum. Take a look at it on your computer if you have a chance to see the full glory of the shot.
