GBP member asteinmann has shared 1,948 GreatBirdPics from all over the world. His recent birding trip took him to Africa and he shared the following with us about his trip:
“We started with a 2-week birding safari with Road Scholar that took us to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia. After that we did another week of customized birding around Cape Town and then at Kruger National Park in South Africa. We enjoyed the safaris and got to see plenty of mammals (41) including elephants, giraffes, lions, buffalo, impala, hyena, jackal, mongoose, hippos, monkeys, and baboons. While on foot we got within 10 yards of a family of ten white rhinos!”
I asked him to choose some of his favorite birds and here are a couple of them:
The Red-headed Weaver was first on his list. Here is the striking male.
The Giant Kingfisher was another favorite – he spotted this one in Namibia.
Another Kingfisher spotted there was the Malachite Kingfisher. This one was a juvenile – I love the colorful feathers on it head.
Also seen in Namibia was an African Fish Eagle which he called “a strikingly handsome bird.”
Asteinmann’s favorite sighting was not a bird, though – a Leopard gave him some great looks!
